Digital Identity: The revolution of new domains. The "big bang" for big companies start now.

Recently attended a conference with Amadeu Abril and Jordi Hinojosa, digital Naming CEO. Was of great interest because it addresses practical ways to new challenges in the field of domain registration, which will change the current policy.

What are the changes that will occur?

Essentially, it authorizes any word (company, brand, city, organization ...) in any language and script can record your own generic domains. For example www.cocacola.cocacola, www.cocacola.bebida or www.gaudí.barcelona,
www.rockinrio.musica, with possible completion in other alphabets (Chinese, Cyril, Arabic .).

This new policy is the biggest change in history that spans the address system of the Network

During the period from January to April 2012 may be submitted requests payment of $ 185,000 (130,000 euros), and annual maintenance will be around 14,000 euros. Currently there are 22 domain names, which include some 250 countries themselves. From this we happen to have hundreds or thousands of types of domains. Obviously, for reasons of price seems a radical change of domains that had cost 4 dollars a thousand, but ... ... ... ... .. why?

In opinion of experts is encouraged to identify in the digital world and becomes universal network with new scripts.

Now this is not within reach of small companies, or even have an international vocation.

Each applicant, as we could see and as stated in the blog syncblog must submit a business plan that concrete economic or cultural interest in the new domain, and this simple procedure will not be cheap. It is assumed that, two weeks after the closing deadline for nominations of new domains (between January and April 2012), publish a list of all requests and will open the processing of claims and disputes in the cases of conflict. It is estimated that the second quarter of 2013 could be active in the early Internet domains.

The revolution is of magnitude as that set new dispute resolution bodies and it seems that there is still much to go.

In my opinion there are several important points:

A.   What we register domain, of our trademark or that of our activity?

B.   What impact will our registration on search engines?

I think that's the key question will know what real impact in practice when searching on the net. You can position the one with the domain cocacola.cocola above?

C.   It seems likely suffer conflict or cybersquatting?

I believe that the amounts involved and the requirements only in very specific cases may have disputes or interests, but we talked about global 1 st division and some of the country, but NOT for most small companies of our country.
I think essential to be vigilant in the protection of brands, mainly in the control period and seems to have new challenges that can change the digital identity of companies and strategic planning, so at least no-brainer.
